Disappointing free stuff

You might remember from a few blog entries back that I had ordered several free samples of perfumes. I was hoping that it would come in pretty, tiny bottles. I WAS WRONG. Four out of 5 samples haven’t turned up, and the ones that did are from Burberry and they’re SHIT. It’s basically smelling strips, a piece of paper with foil on it that you pull off to release the scent. I tried rubbing it on my wrist and my wrist turned black (great, since I had to go to work just afterwards and can’t wear long sleeves at work). I think a lot of the appeal of perfume is the design of the bottle and not just the smell, so these strips really aren’t doing it for me.

What horror has this rock seen?

Horrified stone on the beach. Or is it a happy face? I’m going for a grin of terror.

We had a little cookie decoration competition a couple of days ago. Turns out neither of us can actually decorate cookies! We made two of each shape and decorated 10 cookies each. I’m going to go ahead and say that I don’t think either of us are meant to become cookie decorating artists. I decided to post this because a) It could be a fun thing to do with your children? (although I should point out that I would never eat something a child has touched unless it was my own child). b) Even better to do when drunk.

Alright, this was our equipment (+ a whole loud of icing sugar):Image

And this was the results (my cookies are on the right):

(It’s supposed to be Homer Simpsons on the left and Walter White on the right).

We left a bit of a mess too:

Fancy traditional steak and potato dinner – Vegetarian Edition

Image

I’m a vegetarian but sometimes I like to keep things traditional and make a “steak and potatoes” fancy dinner. This is what I made last night and I decided to post it here if anyone is looking for ideas. It’s not very complicated, it’s just Hasselback potatoes, red wine sauce, peppered Quorn steaks and some steamed cauliflower and broccoli on the side. We followed this recipe for the red wine sauce. The Hasselback potatoes are made by peeling a few big potatoes and slicing them thinly, putting them in a wooden spoon to avoid cutting all the way through. After you’re done slicing them, they’re supposed to be buttered and put into the oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes you should take them out and butter them again and cover them in breadcrumbs and salt and then put them back into the oven for another 25 minutes. I screwed up and put the breadcrumbs on first thing, but it was fine. The peppered Quorn steaks doesn’t require much cooking and they’re already seasoned, so I just buttered them and put them in the oven for like 10 minutes. Delicious!

Neon colored bodily fluids

Day 11 of my cold and my snot has turned an alarmingly bright neon yellow. Is my nose like a mood ring? What does it all mean??

I haven’t posted in the few days because I’ve worked like 21 hours in 30 hours and I wasn’t going to spend a minute of my precious spare time posting. I tried uploading a post from my phone, of my cappuccino which looked a bit like a sloth, but it didn’t work. I’m sure you must be weeping at the thought of missing out of such high quality material so I saved the photo for you:

Umm. Yeah.

In other words, not much has been going on. I was dumb enough to agree to do work 7 am – 9 pm yesterday and 7 am – 2 pm today. I thought it would be fine, but it turns out I haven’t quite recovered from my cold and when I came home yesterday evening I was having a lot of coughing fits. The irony is that I agreed to take on the shifts to make up for the days I was home sick last week, because I don’t have any sick pay. Oh well, all I need is a good rest and then I will be fine…ish. The problem with starting work at 7 am is that I have to get up at 5 – 5:30 am to get ready, which is a pain when you’ve worked until 9 pm the day before because there’s not enough time to sleep or wind down. Luckily I’m only working evening tomorrow, which means I get to sleep in!

Sorry for the pointless update, I will leave you with this to make up for it:

BAC Beer fest

I was at a beer fest yesterday. I think I was at least 30 years younger than the average and had one third of the average beer gut and the ratio between women and men was something like 1:15, but I had a good time. I can’t drink much at all anymore due to my sensitive stomach. I had two half-pints and after that I felt really queasy. The beers we had were called Pickled Santa (Hop Back: fucking awful), Intergalatic IPA (Black Iris: yummy), Espresso Stout (Dark Star, for being coffee-induced beer it was relatively drinkable, but not exactly tasty), BG Sips (Blue Monkey: alright), Rat of Khan (Rat and Ratchet: I didn’t like it – too lager-y and bitter for me) and Blackberry Cascade (Saltaire: horrible! Didn’t taste of blackberries at all, in my opinion). I wanted to try these ones, but my stomach wasn’t really up for it: Naked Ladies (by Twickenham, just because of the name, it’s funny to order), Dark Side Of The Moose (Purple Moose, guess three times why I wanted it), Raspberry Blonde and Triple Chocoholic (both Saltaire: not sure if they’re actually good but if you manage to fuse raspberries or chocolate with beer successfully I bet it would be awesome).

I’m hoping I won’t get any phone calls today. I’ve had a cold for the last few days and just as I thought it was getting better, out of nowhere I develop a terribly sore throat and now I can’t speak. My boyfriend told me he would take care of me and fuss over me; that lasted two hours, then he started poking fun of me instead. Pffh, and I who was kind enough to do what I never do for him: I let him borrow my headphones. Sharing in-ear headphones is the worst, I hate to think about sticking someone else’s earwax into my ear.

Since I’ve been feeling unwell for a few days now, I’ve stayed inside and not done much. I have an urge to go shopping, but I don’t have the energy and it’s not wise financially, so I’ve sent out like 4-5 requests for free perfume samples. I know I’m probably going to be bombarded with commercials in my mailbox, but as we are not planning on living at this address for more than a few months, what’s the harm? I reaaaally hope they arrive in cute miniature bottles and not in crappy plastic bottles or a tiny wet-wipe package… but who cares, it’s free.

Being sick also means that I’ve been overly invested in gossip the last few days. I’m terribly amused that people are reacting so strongly to that quote from JK Rowling about how she might have changed Ron and Hermione’s relationship if she had written the books today and that she was limited by deciding the ending to the series early on. Which makes sense, since most relationships in the books were underdeveloped. I wouldn’t mind if none of main characters had any romantic storylines. But holy shit people are overreacting and screaming and arguing why Ron/Hermione was better than Harry/Hermione and so on. That was somewhat acceptable in 2007, when the series was on-going/had just ended and THE READERS WERE STILL MAINLY TEENAGERS. It’s somewhat ridiculous now, years later, when the people who were so invested in the books are in their twenties…

Ughhhhzzzz. I think I have a cold. My nose is stuffed and my head is mean. It’s nice weather outside and I really want to go outside before my shift starts, but if I know myself I will just lie here on the sofa and feel sorry for myself. At least evening shifts are fairly easy. Because of my sad state, I present you with a very simple, this-is-what-I’ve-been-up-to blog post.

It’s funny how the weather here changes so dramatically from day to day. All of yesterday we had strong wind and rain, today it’s blue skies. We had talked about going in to central London yesterday, but because of the weather we ended up going to Westfield mall. I’m not a fan of malls because they’re always filled with franchises and few stand-alone shops, but it was nice to be able to windowshop somewhere dry and warm. Westfield mall is also a bit more bearable than other malls because it’s quite big and pretty,- and filled with insanely expensive things, of course. It was a mix of pricer brands and normal brands, but nothing really caught my interest. It’s not really uncommon that I spend an entire day at a shopping place and end up not buying anything except a coffee.  I had just bought clothes from Dorothy Perkins the day before (I buy almost all buy clothes from Dorothy Perkins) so I guess my need for shopping has been satisfied for a week or so. I bought a pair of regular blue jeans, which I haven’t owned in ages, a pair of black formal trousers for work and a bright shirt (see pic below).

I’m the worst when it comes to getting food on my clothes. We were eating at Gourmet Burger when this photo was taken, so when the food arrived I put on a darker sweater. I am NOT getting ketchup on my pretty new shirt. When we got home we finished watching the season finale of AHS. AHS has never been perfect, but I think this season engaged me the least. Zoey and Kyle were boring and bland as cardboard cut-outs, Madison could have been interesting but ended up being too pathetic about Zoey and Kyle, Queenie didn’t get enough character development and Nan got killed off too soon. It could have been a great season but the storylines were really rushed and it felt like all we ever saw was women backstabbing or murdering each other and then coming back from the dead instead of seeing HOW they actually developed their powers. I think Misty was the only one I really cared about, although Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Francis Convoy all played their roles really well. It would be nice to see Jessica Lange play a different sort of character for the next season, since all her roles in AHS have been sassy, strong and cruel women. She does play that role really well but it would be fun to see her play someone a bit softer.

Ramble ramble. I need to get some food cooking before it’s work time. I will try to post an update Monday afternoon, I have like 25 post drafts that I should finish at some point and set so they automatically post at a certain day and time to maintain a more regular posting.

Hope everyone else gets a  better weekend than me!
